How can you tell that you’re lacking magnesium?
Although it’s an invisible hero of our health, magnesium is especially valuable. About 50% of the body’s total magnesium is found in bones, the remaining 50% in organs and tissues, and just 1% in the bloodstream. But how can you tell if you’re lacking magnesium?
It is a nutrient that isn’t usually placed in the “front line” of the body’s nutritional needs, such as calcium, iron or vitamin C.
However, its biological role makes it valuable for health. And it’s an ingredient that is definitely important to know a few things about.
How can you tell that you’re lacking magnesium?
Some of the symptoms that should alert you are:
Muscle cramps
Among the symptoms that may indicate magnesium deficiency, experts point out muscle cramps. This is due to the fact that magnesium plays a role in muscle contractions.
Fatigue and weakness
Because low magnesium is a sign of low potassium levels, fatigue and weakness may be among the symptoms, according to experts.
Altered heart rhythm
Magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium are electrolytes that help regulate muscle and many other bodily functions, including heart. With extreme magnesium deficiency, some people have a faster heart rate than normal.
Hypertension
Current observational studies suggest that magnesium deficiency is a risk factor for heart disease and may increase blood pressure.
Osteoporosis
Magnesium helps to regulate blood calcium levels and, in turn, can affect the amount of calcium available to build and maintain strong bones.
Its deficiency can lead to weakening of bone density over time and, if left untreated, can lead to the development of osteoporosis over time.
