How animals contribute positively to children’s lives

Animals can be described as man’s best friends. They teach us a lot. And they always offer us their company and love. Undoubtedly, we all get excited (either happily or frightened) when we see an animal. While some people get scared when they see dogs, for example, majority loves them. Most of the time, young children are the ones looking for a pet, or an animal in general. Really, how do animals contribute positively to children’s lives?

Their positive contribution

It’s very good for the child to have contact with an animal. After all, research shows that animals are essential in every child’s life. So how do animals make a positive contribution to children’s lives? In the doctoral dissertation of the veterinarian Aikaterini I. Loukaki (Athens 2011), it’s mentioned that an animal helps in the socialization of the child. A pet becomes the support and the “source of security”, helping the child to socialize without hesitation.

Also, a small pet, as Florence Nightingale (1880) states, “Is a very good companion for the sick, especially for children and the elderly.” Children realize that animals can’t speak. Thus, they can express how they feel, talk to them and feel comfortable. After all, how many times have we heard children talking to a butterfly or a bird? Or how many times did we see a child sharing his food with a pigeon or a dog?

They learn to love

How do animals make a positive contribution to children’s lives? Let us keep in mind the words “friendship” and “trust”. Can an animal be considered a child’s most loyal friend? And also how many times have we seen children, when they take a break from their lessons, run to caress their pet dog? Or how some would prefer to walk their dog instead of playing video games? They can even consider this action a beautiful escape from stress and sadness after a bad incident.

The relationship between them may well develop into a relationship of devotion or interdependence. “I have to take care of my dog or cat”, “Look at him smiling at me, every time I caress him”. Children often feel the need to show their love through the care they can offer. And through care, of course, the child learns other values, such as responsibility, kindness and eternal love.

They get creative

It can be said that what often unites an animal with a child is innocence. How many times have we observed animals playing with a ball, or chasing a fly? Things that children do too. The innocence of both, most of the time brings them together in their games, as they both need them. For the child, play is a great form of learning. They learn and develop their skills in all areas.

Playing with the dog or cat in the yard, or looking at a goldfish in the bowl for them is very important. They need to see, observe, reflect and then learn and ask. Thus, they learn or rather understand and appreciate all the existential dimensions.

So it’s never too late to choose a new-loyal friend for your child. Because with the pet he will develop real relationships and learn many values. It will become his friend, his guardian, his shadow and his mirror.
